Considerations for Online Adult Learners

Adult Learning theories recognize the challenges and rewards of teaching to an audience which is more mature than the traditional college student. Most Online students are working full-time, often more than 40 hours per week, and may have family obligations. These commitments result in a curtailed window for academic study, requiring efficiency in managing their schedules. Adult learners appreciate flexibility and support from their instructors in completing their academic requirements and balancing their work/life/academic obligations. Research has shown that they are highly motivated, committed to academic rigor, and want their learning to be immediately applicable to their jobs and the real world.

Online Student Locations & Schedule

  • Online students are located around the world in a variety of time zones in Europe, South America, and Asia.

  • Nexus recommends that all Online students be given an additional 24 hours (1 day) to submit their homework and exams.

  • Nexus includes a list of all Online students’ locations and time zone in Canvas under the Time Zone tab, in order to help facilitate group formation and synchronous web meetings.

  • Office Hours: Nexus highly recommends scheduling separate office hours for On-Campus and Online students. Online students will greatly appreciate some available slots that are outside of the normal 8-5 working day.
