MICHIGAN ENGINEERING'S PARTNERSHIP WITH KLA

KLA and the University of Michigan College of Engineering have partnered since 2007 to leverage the educational resources of the College to create customized learning opportunities that support the personal learning goals of KLA employees while successfully advancing the talent development goals of the company. The partnership is designed to provide KLA engineers with technical leadership, depth in their own engineering discipline, breadth across engineering disciplines, knowledge of basic management issues, and the ability to influence and direct product development at a systems level. Through a broad array of online and on-campus courses, students will be well-prepared to tackle complex, large-scale systems challenges involving many stakeholders.

KLA employees have the following options to continue their engineering education with the top-ranked University of Michigan College of Engineering:

  • Professional Graduate Certificate in Systems Engineering
Online through Nexus: Non-Candidate for Degree option only – for global KLA Employees

  • Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering + Design
Online through the Integrative Systems + Design (ISD) division – for global KLA Employees

  • Master of Engineering in Electrical Computer Engineering
On Campus through the Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) department – for Ann Arbor KLA Employees

  • Individual Engineering Courses (visit KLA-Internal Enrollment Approval Site for this list)
Online or On Campus – ECE courses are mostly residential; others may be available online

How Do I Get Started?

Please submit the KLA Student Intent Form to briefly describe your continuing engineering education goals. This should be filled out each term. Please answer all the questions on the form. A Nexus representative will contact you within 48 hours to discuss your goals and help you get started.

  •  If you have identified a preferred degree program, Nexus will forward your request to the appropriate graduate coordinator who can provide more information about the admission requirements, curriculum, and applications and admissions processes.
  • If you are interested in enrolling in either the Professional Graduate Certificate in Systems Engineering, you will apply for a Non-Candidate-For-Degree (NCFD) admissions*. Likewise, if you are only interested in taking one or two courses without any intention of pursuing a master’s degree, you will also apply for NCFD admissions.

*It is important to know, however, that if you are admitted as an NCFD student, no more than six credits earned as an NCFD student may apply towards a master’s degree. Students seeking to apply NCFD credits to the Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering + Design or the Master’s in Electrical & Computer Engineering degrees must apply for the degree before enrolling for additional credits.

KLA Partnership Programs

Professional Graduate Certificate in Systems Engineering

Program Objectives

  • Broaden the perspective of engineers by teaching a top-down interdisciplinary engineering approach for the development, design, and manufacturing of complex systems, and balancing the trade-offs required to successfully build these systems.
  • Strengthen the technical competence and depth of professionals by teaching advanced skills in their engineering disciplines, and by infilling courses in engineering outside of their primary engineering areas.
  • Students must obtain 12-credits to earn the certificate.

Admissions Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or a related field
  • Completion of prerequisite courses (or equivalent) prior to enrolling in a course
  • KLA students must be enrolled through U-M as Non-Candidate-For-Degree (NCFD) student in order to complete the professional certificate. NCFD status can be changed in a subsequent semester, and allows qualified students to begin their studies before completing a degree application.

NCFD Admissions Process

Non-Credit-For-Degree (NCFD) applications must be completed (including received transcripts) at least two weeks before the semester begins. Your completed applications must be submitted to the College of Engineering no later than November 15, 2023 for Winter 2024. However, applying sooner will ensure all materials are received well before the semester.

Requirements

  1. Online Application*
  2. Application fee
  3. Statement of Purpose with emphasis on program of study
  4. All Official Transcripts (these should be requested as soon as possible so they arrive in time to be processed)

Transcripts can be sent to:

College of Engineering Registrar
University of Michigan College of Engineering
Office of Student Affairs, 145A Chrysler Center
2121 Bonisteel Boulevard
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-2092

*Note: NCFD professional certificate applicants do not need to include other application documents, such as letters of recommendation, etc.

Certificate Time Limit

A minimum set of courses must be completed within five years of your start date to be eligible for the professional certificate. Credits may be applied toward a graduate degree for up to five years after earning the credits.

For Admitted Students

After approval of NCFD status, students may make their course selections via the KLA registration button below.
