CANVAS TOOLS

Exams & Quizzes

Overview

Many instructors successfully use the Canvas Quizzes feature to post quizzes and exams. This approach is especially helpful for online students. Exam dates should follow the same schedule as for on campus students. Still, instructors may wish to allow off campus students some flexibility in the actual time to take exams to account for potential time zone differences or other conflicts.

Students should be informed of the University of Michigan policy that if they are unable to take an exam at their scheduled time, they need to make arrangements to take it before the scheduled date.

USE CASES / OPTIONS FOR OFFERING EXAMS & QUIZZES REMOTELY:

For courses with remote learners, several options are available for offering quizzes and/or exams. The purpose of this document is to briefly explain these options, offer some tips for implementation, and a Nexus recommendation based on our past experiences.

The options below range from least to most secure monitoring (Note: All options below assume students will affirm the Honor Code with submission.)

Option A: Take Home Exam (e.g., Using Word or PDF File)

    • Distribute an electronic version of the exam to students via email, Canvas Assignments, or Canvas Announcements
    • TIP: Distribute via a Canvas Assignment to provide a more secure link to download the test and to allow students an option to upload a file for submission to help with grading/tracking.
        • Go to Canvas >> Assignments >> Create Assignment
        • In the assignment, create a link to an exam stored in a ‘Files’ folder that is viewable only to instructors (Note: Set option to only available to student with link)
        • Then, set the submission type to ‘Online’ and check box to allow File Uploads.

Option B: Online Quiz/Exam in Canvas

    • Create a Quiz in Canvas utilizing a variety of question types available, including Multiple Choice, True/False, Fill in Blank, and Short Answer.
      • Go to Canvas >> Quizzes >> Add Quiz
    • TIP: Within the quiz tool, fix the allowable time window to take the exam. To do so, go to Assign Options and set the date and time for the exam.
    • Additional Security: Require an access code to open the quiz. Or, for additional restrictions, see Canvas help for IP filtering options.

Option C: Use Student-Identified Exam Monitor to Distribute and Monitor a Paper-Based Exam Exam

    • Require students to self-identify exam monitors from a list of acceptable monitors (e.g., work supervisor, teacher/university instructor, librarian, school official).
    • Verify monitors (require identification and sign an acknowledgement form).
    • Distribute exam/quiz to the exam monitor with exam instructions (e.g., allowable time, what is allowable to bring to exam).
    • Have exam monitor print, distribute, and collect exam per instructions. (for extra security, require a password for exam monitor to open document)
    • Have exam monitor scan/return exam to instructor (or academic unit designate).
    • After receipt and grading, ask exam monitors to destroy all exam information.
    • TIP: Click here for a description of this process used by the ISD division.

Option D: Use a 3rd Party Paid Exam Proctor Service

    • Distribute exam either through an independent test center. Of note, some test centers offer both live and online proctoring.
    • TIP: While this option offers the most security for remote test taking, it also is the least convenient and costliest option for students.

Overall, we recommend Option B or Option C, as these options provide a high level of exam security without burdening students with finding and paying for a Proctoring service.
